It’s not often we consider how small changes to our bedtime routine can improve the quality of our sleep.

However, small changes, such as keeping our socks on at night, can be really important.

TEMPUR are here to take a more detailed look into how keeping your socks on can make a big difference to your night’s sleep…

IS THERE ANY REASON TO KEEP YOUR SOCKS ON WHEN YOU SLEEP?

Warming up our feet causes the blood vessels to dilate, signalling to our brain that it is time for sleep. So, when struggling to nod off, popping on a pair of socks with PJs can be a good idea.

Wearing socks can even help with other health conditions, such as dry skin…

KEEPING YOUR SOCKS ON ACTS AS A TEMPERATURE REGULATOR

Making sure your body is at a cool temperature when sleeping is crucial.

You don’t want to be too hot, as you will feel too alert. But, alternatively you do not want to be too cold either.

Our feet are naturally one of the coolest parts of our body, as they don’t have as much muscle in them to produce heat. Therefore, when falling asleep, our body redistributes heat from our core to our feet.

If our feet are too cold however, our body is taking up too much energy to try and heat them sufficiently instead of trying to maintain a general cool temperature.

If our temperature is all over the place, it interrupts the flow of the sleep hormone, melatonin, from entering our bloodstream.

So, by wearing socks our body only has to focus on keeping cool across the entire body, rather than focusing on heating our feet.

DRY SKIN RELIEVER

For dry skin, wearing socks in bed can be a game changer.

As temperatures start to drop in winter, the air struggles to hold in enough moisture before it condenses due to the cold.

This can result in very dry surroundings, as the air sucks all the moisture it can from its surroundings, and from you. Therefore, chapped lips and sore feet are not uncommon in cold weather.

Dry skin on your feet can especially flare after waking up in the morning due to your body lacking any moisture during the night.

One way to prevent this is by lathering your feet up with moisturiser and then placing cotton socks over the top before sleeping. The socks keep the moisture contained instead of it being smeared on covers or consumed by the air.

Who knew that wearing socks in bed could have such an impact!
