New Year, New You, New Sleep

As we start another year, a common concern for many of us is choosing our New Year’s Resolutions.

Will we resolve to exercise more, be healthier, change jobs, dedicate more time to our family and friends, or something else?

One of the best ways to ensure we meet our New Year goals is by getting enough sleep. So, how can you change your sleep pattern to boost your energy, your focus, and your health in 2019? TEMPUR® takes a look at some top sleep resolutions…

Sleep in the New Year

After the Christmas holidays, we are all familiar with the concept of ‘New Year, New Me’. However, with the return to work or school and endless cold, grey wintry days, it’s no wonder people fail to stick to their resolutions.

To restore your energy this January, try focusing on your sleep habits. More sleep means more energy, a more positive attitude, and more drive to focus on work, life and family or friends this year.

Sleep better tips

Try waking up and going to bed at the same time every day to implement a strong routine. Try to stick to this even on weekends to ensure your body stays in a healthy rhythm.

As well as sticking to a good routine, you should also make sure you are getting enough sleep. The average adult should try to aim for seven to nine hours sleep a night to stay healthy. Too little or too much sleep can lead to feeling grumpy, demotivated, or lethargic.

If you drink a lot of caffeine, you may find it hard to fall asleep. Try reducing your caffeine intake and replace coffee with decaf or green tea. Similarly, eating too close to bedtime can also cause sleep problems. Try to leave a few hours between your last meal and going to bed.

Change your sleep environment

New year, new room? –try some bedroom feng shui to revitalise your sleeping environment. Positioning your bed in a different place may work wonders for your quality of sleep, while investing in a new mattress or pillow will replenish your energy in no time!

To wind down at night, try not to use phones or laptops just before bed, as they may keep you from drifting off. Instead, read a book or listen to music to relax – when you wake up you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle anything.

If you lack motivation when it comes to sticking to your new year goals, why not try creating a mood board or a vision board in your bedroom? Pin inspiring images, quotes or words on your bedroom walls to motivate you to achieve your 2019 goals.

How to avoid sickness in 2019

If your resolution is to be healthier in 2019, there are several key ways you can improve your chances of avoiding colds and coughs.

  • Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables – the vitamins and nutrients will help to support your immune system
  • Exercise more – as well as being a mood-booster, exercise also helps strengthen your immune system
  • Wash your hands – cleaning your hands frequently will reduce germs and bacteria, and therefore the risk of catching a cold
  • Sleep – when you get more ZZZs, your body is able to rest and repair itself much more quickly
